Frances (Chloë Grace Moretz) is a sweet and naive young girl trying to make it on her own in New York City. When she finds a forgotten handbag on a subway, she naturally returns it to its rightful owner. The owner is Greta (Isabelle Huppert) - an eccentric French piano teacher who loves classical music and is lonely. Frances has recently lost her own mother, and she quickly becomes attached to the widow, Greta. But Greta's maternal care crumbles and becomes increasingly disturbed, and Frances discovers that nothing in Greta's life is what it seems.
