Labyrinth of Silence
Frankfurt, 1958. The German economy is booming and a war-weary nation would rather forget what happened during World War II and focus on the future. When a journalist accidentally discovers that a former prison guard in the Auschwitz concentration camp is now working at the local school, no public authorities are willing to deal with the issue, except for the young lawyer Johann Radmann. With an unwavering will, Johann succeeds in digging up documents with crucial evidence against several thousand SS officers who served in the horrific extermination camp and who are now public employees. An important part of Germany's history and the chance to have the truth brought to record is disappearing in a labyrinth of silence, and everyone seems to have been involved - even at the highest levels of government.
Labyrinth of Silence depicts the Germans' confrontation with a national sense of guilt that was as much about ignorance on the part of a large part of the population as the reluctance of some in power to get the truth out. The film still raises relevant questions about war crimes, collective memory and how a country's history ends up being written.
