The Greta Garbo Collection

Contains the following film:
Anna Christie (1931)
Mata Hari (1931)
Queen Christina (1933)
Anna Karenina (1935)

Well over a block into this film from 1930, which is based on a play by Eugene O'Neill, the audience heard the voice of silent film diva Greta Garbo for the first time. Gimme a whiskey, she said, and then she was also a talkie star. Anna Christie is a drama about a former prostitute whose past threatens to destroy her chances for a happy life. The film was also recorded in a German version, which in Garbo's opinion was better.

Mata Hari (1931)

In Paris in 1917, the sensual Mata Hari (Greta Garbo) works undercover as an erotic dancer. In reality, she is a German spy, and as such she is an expert in seducing and extorting military secrets from high-ranking officers. It has already gone over the Russian general Shubin (Lionel Barrymore), and now she has set her sights on the young and ambitious lieutenant Rosanov (Ramon Navarro). But the secret police are on her trail.

Queen Christina (1933)

Rouben Mamoulian, one of the most visually brilliant film directors in film history, does not deal much with historical accuracy in his stylish Queen Christina, but rather with visual beauty and good cinematic storytelling. Greta Garbo has one of her best roles as the Swedish queen from the time around the Thirty Years' War. She is forced into a politically correct marriage, but is in love with a Spanish officer (John Gilbert), who is also Catholic.

Anna Karenina (1935)

Greta Garbo is Anna Karenina in this classic, well-acted version of one of world literature's great love dramas. Anna is unhappily married to Karenin (a teeth-grinding Basil Rathbone), but surrenders to the dashing unmarried officer Vronsky (Fredric March), who, on the other hand, is unsuccessfully wooed by young Kitty, a relative of Anna's sister-in-law. It all takes place in Moscow long before the time of the communists and the five-year plans.
