This war story begins in 1914. The world is dominated by the European powers. When the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne is assassinated, a catastrophic conflict erupts. Attempts to break the stalemate with frontal machine-gun attacks lead to large numbers of casualties and the production of newer and more terrifying weapons. On the battlefield, massive artillery, gas, and the penetration of tanks gave the war a new dimension.
The arrival of the bomber brought the civilian population closer to the reality of war. At sea, shipping was cut off by the U-boat, putting entire nations at risk. After two and a half years, the war ended in a bloody stalemate. On April 6, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson declared war on Germany and the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) were formed. By November 1918, 9 million Allied soldiers, sailors, and airmen had lost their lives. This authentic documentary provides a picture of the century's first global war. Most historians agree that the A.E.F turned the conflict from a possible defeat to an Allied victory on the Western Front.
