Arn is part of the powerful Folkungas family. He grows up in a monastery among Cistercian monks. Here he is trained in fencing, riding and archery by a former Templar who serves as a monk as penance for a sin. When he leaves the monastery, he is involved in the struggle between the noble families, all of whom are trying to take the throne of the young nation that will soon become the Kingdom of Sweden. He then helps his friend, Knut Eriksson, to kill the old king, Karl Sverkersson, which leads to a war between two factions. However, Arn and his fiancée, Cecilia Algotsdotter, have a premarital affair, and when her sister is angry with Arn when he does not want to sleep with her, she gossips and lies to Mother Rikissa, who in addition to being the abbess of the monastery where Cecilia and her sister take turns staying for a month, is also of the oath-taking family, i.e. that she is interested in helping to prevent Arn's childhood friend Knut from coming to power. They are therefore unjustly judged, and for political reasons sentenced to 20 years of penance. Arn in the Holy Land, Cecilia in the very same monastery that Mother Rikissa rules over, and without seeing her and Arn's child in all 20 years, (Arn's uncle, and the king's close advisor, Birger Brosa (Brosa because he often smiles) does take care of the child as if it were his own.)
