Goodbye Bafana, or The Color of Freedom (US), is a 2007 drama film, directed by Bille August, about the relationship between Nelson Mandela (Dennis Haysbert) and James Gregory (Joseph Fiennes)
Goodbye Bafana tells the true story of James Gregory, a racist white South African whose life changed when he was assigned to guard a black prisoner for more than 20 years. The prisoner's name was Nelson Mandela.
The prison guard, James Gregory, a typical South African who viewed blacks as subhuman, grew up in the Transkei, where he learned to speak Xhosa at a young age. This made him the perfect prison guard for Mandela and his party members on Robben Island. Gregory could speak the language and thus spy - without their knowledge. But the trick backfired. Under the influence of Mandela, Gregory's loyalties slowly shift from racism to outright support of Mandela's fight for a free and democratic South Africa.
