Same procedure as last year, Miss Sophie?
Old, semi-senile Miss Sophie is busy, and she insists on celebrating a birthday for all her friends. Unfortunately, her friends have passed away years ago, but the good butler James cannot bear to disappoint the lady of the house and therefore plays the roles of her friends during dinner with all that that entails - and Miss Sophie loves to toast...
The story was originally written as a play and premiered in London in 1948. It was not until many years later, in 1963, that the play was produced for TV, and it was a German television station that came up with the idea.
The famous tiger skin that James stumbles over was not originally part of the sketch, but when the butler accidentally fell over it during a theatrical production of the play, it caused such laughter among the audience that the tiger has since become a permanent part of the story.
Despite the fact that both the actors and the dialogue in the play are British, the sketch has never been shown on English TV.
90th Birthday has earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most rebroadcast TV sketch ever!
