Burnt by the Sun
The year is 1936, when revolutionary hero Kotov (Nikita Mikhalkov), his young wife Marusia (Ingeborga Dapkunaite) and their 6-year-old daughter, Nadya, are enjoying a glorious summer day at the family villa in a rural idyll.
Suddenly, Marusia's childhood friend and youth lover Dimitri (Oleg Menshikov) returns from the past. At first, the reunion is great, but as the day progresses, it becomes clear that Dimitri is not just visiting. He has come on a bloody political errand.
Nikita Mikhalkov wrote the script and directs himself in the lead role in this painfully beautiful drama. The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and won the Grand Prize of the Jury at Cannes, where the film was also nominated for the Palme d'Or.
