The Man Who Cried
The year is 1927. The little Jewish girl Fegele lives a happy life with her father and grandmother in a small Russian village. But with the eternal persecution of Jews, her father goes to America to find work and then sends for the family. Shortly after her father's departure, violence takes over the village. Fegele is chased away along with some fleeing villagers who hope to get to America, but she ends up on a boat to England. Fegele is renamed Suzie, sent to a Christian orphanage and a school where she is not allowed to speak Yiddish. Here she learns to sing.
Ten years later, she goes to Paris, where she gets a job and meets the Russian dancer, Lola (Cate Blanchett). She begins to save up, hoping to be able to afford to go to America.
Suzie (Christina Ricci) falls in love with the gypsy Cesar (Johnny Depp) and Lola falls for the arrogant Italian opera singer Dante Dominio (John Turturro). When the German army invades Paris, Dante, with Lola by his side, collaborates with the Nazis...
